Senator Nkechi Nwaogu has rejected claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that she remains a member of the party, insisting that she resigned in May before joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Nwaogu, who is the NDC candidate for Abia Central Senatorial District in the 2027 general election, made the clarification amid an ongoing dispute between the two parties over her membership and candidacy.

The former senator, who represented Abia Central from 2007 to 2015 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said she formally resigned from the APC at her ward level in early May.

The NDC had earlier affirmed her candidacy, with its Publicity Secretary, Emeka Luis Okoro, stating on Friday that Nwaogu joined the party before the May 10 deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the submission of party membership registers.

The party also maintained that Nwaogu did not participate in the APC senatorial primary in Abia Central and urged its members to disregard claims challenging her candidacy.

The APC, however, disputed the NDC’s position in a statement issued on Saturday by its Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru.

The party insisted that Nwaogu remained a registered APC member, saying she purchased the party’s Senate nomination form and participated in its Abia Central senatorial primary held on May 18, 2026.

According to the APC, Nwaogu polled 12,033 votes to emerge runner-up in the primary conducted by the party’s senatorial primary committee, chaired by Hon. Erasmus Cishark.

The APC further claimed that Nwaogu’s name was included in its membership register submitted to INEC on May 10 and that it had no record of her resignation.

It added that her membership and registration details remained in its database and that of INEC.

Responding to the claims, Nwaogu denied being an APC member and maintained that her resignation was properly effected at the ward level.

“I don’t belong to APC. I left them a long time ago, in early May. Don’t mind them,” she said.

She also disputed the APC’s account of its senatorial primary, saying that although she initially completed the nomination process, she did not participate in the election.

Nwaogu alleged that the APC was insisting on claiming her membership because of the strength of her candidacy.

Meanwhile, INEC’s final published list of senatorial candidates lists Nwaogu as the NDC candidate for Abia Central, while Atuma Emeka is listed as the APC candidate for the district.
