Nollywood has written itself into the record books after the crime thriller *Black Market* pulled a crowd of more than 51,000 people to a single open-air screening at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos on Saturday, earning official recognition from Guinness World Records for the largest audience ever assembled for a film screening in one location. 

A Guinness World Records official announced the milestone on site, confirming that the turnout had eclipsed the long-standing record of 43,624 people set in 2015 when Iglesia Ni Cristo screened the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena.

That earlier record had stood since October 4, 2015, in Ciudad de Victoria, Philippines.

The evening had been building toward that moment for hours. Gates at TBS opened at 2pm, with a red-carpet segment following at about 3pm, while the main screening itself was scheduled for between 7pm and 8:30pm. Music, food and games kept the crowd entertained through the wait, with long queues forming around the venue and the TBS roundabout well before the film rolled. Distributor FilmOne captured the moment on social media, declaring: “51,000+ people. One screen. One moment that just made history.”

The attendance figure itself briefly stirred some back-and-forth before Guinness settled it. Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat had announced that roughly 64,000 people were on ground for the event, but Guinness World Records clarified that its qualifying figure only counted those who remained in their seats from the start of the film to the end — landing the official tally at 51,000. The confirmation set off cheers, celebration and fireworks across the venue.

Hamzat arrived at the event at about 8:50pm, joining Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture Toke Benson, alongside a string of Nollywood faces including Gabriel Afolayan, Tomi Ojo, Real Warri Pikin, Lateef Adedimeji, Kunle Remi, Stan Nze, Linda Ejiofor and filmmaker Kunle Afolayan. Stan Nze attended alongside his wife, Blessing Obasi, as part of the star-studded turnout.

Beyond the spectacle, *Black Market* itself marks a personal milestone for its makers. The film is the feature directorial debut of Nana-Fatimah Binta Gimsay, a Nigerian screenwriter, director and producer known professionally as Fatimah Binta Gimsay, who also co-wrote the script with Abdul Tijani-Ahmed. The story follows five market women who have built a tightly run cross-border fuel-smuggling operation to survive Nigeria’s fuel scarcity, a fragile balance that collapses after a rival kidnaps the daughter of one of the women, Adesua, forcing the crew into their most dangerous job yet. The film was shot entirely in Abeokuta rather than Lagos, a choice its makers have pointed to as proof that world-class Nollywood stories no longer need a Lagos address.

The record-breaking screening was staged by Rixel Studios in partnership with FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and Switch Visuals Production. The project is notable for its predominantly female production team, with Gimsay directing, Nora Awolowo and Nicole Ofoegbu producing, Omowunmi Dada co-producing and Ladun Awobokun serving as executive producer, while the wider effort drew backing from the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture along with corporate partners including MTN and Puma.

For Nollywood, the achievement lands as more than a box-office flex. It plants an African title, for the first time, inside a Guinness category that had until now belonged entirely to Asia and does so on the same historic ground at Tafawa Balewa Square where Nigeria itself declared independence in 1960.
