The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress and the state House of Assembly have disagreed over a recently passed bill on the management of motor parks. The party has rejected the legislation while the lawmakers insist they have the authority to pass it.

The APC argued that the Assembly lacks the constitutional power to regulate and manage motor parks across the state. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, the party said such powers belong to democratically elected local government councils under Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution.

The party described the Integrated Transport, Traffic and Park Management System Bill as unconstitutional and warned that it could disturb public peace. It also urged Governor Ademola Adeleke not to support what it called an illegal measure.

In response, the House of Assembly dismissed the APC’s position as a misinterpretation of the Constitution. The Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Olamide Tiamiyu, said the lawmakers followed due process and that the state has the power to make laws guiding the functions of local governments.

The Assembly noted that while motor parks are listed among local government functions, the Constitution allows the state legislature to set the legal framework for those functions. It advised the APC to take its concerns to a competent court rather than relying on press statements.
