The National Identity Management Commission has denied reports that Nigeria’s National Identification Number database was compromised, describing the claims circulating on social media as false and misleading.

The commission, in a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, and shared on its X account on Thursday, said the video being circulated was an old report from 2024 that had previously been debunked.

NIMC maintained that its National Identity Database had not been breached or compromised, adding that it operates multiple layers of security to safeguard the personal information of Nigerians and legal residents registered in the system.

The commission said the security measures were designed in accordance with international standards for protecting sensitive identity information.

It warned members of the public against relying on unverified information about the National Identity Management System, noting that false reports could create unnecessary anxiety and confusion.

NIMC urged Nigerians to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information concerning the NIN and the national identity system.

The commission also drew attention to its NIN Authentication service, known as NINAuth, which provides web, application programming interface and mobile-based identity verification services.

According to NIMC, the platform was introduced to improve the security and privacy of identity verification by requiring the consent of NIN holders before their information is released for Know Your Customer procedures and other verification purposes.

The commission said the system allows individuals to authenticate their identities for services including SIM registration, immigration and passport applications, tax-related processes and financial transactions without unnecessarily exposing their NIN or other personal information.

NIMC said the initiative forms part of its efforts to comply with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, particularly provisions relating to the lawful, fair and transparent processing of personal data.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the identity information of Nigerians and legal residents, adding that it would continue to collaborate with relevant security agencies to strengthen its systems and counter misinformation surrounding the national identity database.
