Nigerian content creator, Isbae U has explained why he stepped away from mainstream skit making to launch his interview series, Curiosity Made Me Ask, saying he refused to be lumped in with an already crowded field of comedy creators.

The creator, whose real name is Adebayo Ridwan Abidemi, spoke on The Morayo Show, hosted by media personality, Morayo Afolabi-Brown, in an episode shared on YouTube on Wednesday. He said the show grew out of a period when he was still finding his identity in entertainment, having tried his hand at singing, rapping and acting.

According to him, there came a day he told someone he was done being mediocre and average, and that he did not want to be seen as one of the skit makers.

Isbae U said the concept for the programme came from American comedian, Zach Galifianakis’ interview series, Between Two Ferns, which he used to watch. He recalled that after seeing it again, he felt it was something he could do himself. The show launched in December 2023 and has since hosted a long list of Nigerian entertainers and public figures, including veteran actor Pete Edochie, Kate Henshaw, Teni, Bella Shmurda, Bisola Aiyeola, Bobrisky, Tacha and Charly Boy.

His conversation with former President Olusegun Obasanjo also drew wide attention online.

Describing the idea behind the show, he said it is meant to reveal a side of celebrities that audiences rarely get to see. He admitted that he still gets nervous before interviews, especially when the guest is much older than him, though he said most of his guests have been welcoming and have let him be himself.

He also pushed back on the belief that he has abandoned skit making altogether. Isbae U said he still works behind the scenes, writing stories for some creators and helping others develop theirs, even as Curiosity Made Me Ask takes up most of his public profile. He added that he wants to explore other formats in future.
