Dangote Targets 10 Million Shareholders in Historical Refinery Public Offering
Industrialist Aliko Dangote has announced an ambitious target to attract over 10 million individual retail shareholders through the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. Speaking on the significance of the public listing, the business mogul described the move as a major step toward democratizing ownership of one of Africa’s largest industrial complexes.
The vision aims to transition millions of everyday citizens from being passive consumers of petroleum products into active equity owners in the energy asset.
The public offer, which is being listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), comprises up to 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at ₦525 per share. To make participation accessible to everyday citizens across the country, the minimum subscription threshold has been set at just 10 shares for an entry cost of ₦5,250. Financial analysts note that this low bar allows first-time, retail, and younger investors to gain direct exposure to the capital market.
Funds raised through the public offering are slated to support strategic operational expansions and bolster domestic energy security. The 650,000-barrel-per-day facility is positioning itself for a multi-billion-dollar capacity upgrade aimed at nearly doubling its refining output. Beyond supplying domestic demand, the expanded operations are projected to boost export capacity across regional and global fuel markets.
Financial market experts have hailed the IPO as a historic milestone for Nigeria’s capital market, pointing out that it represents the first time a major petroleum refinery has been opened for public trading on the local exchange. Investment houses expect the entry of millions of new retail investors to deepen domestic market liquidity significantly. Digital brokerage platforms and issuing houses are already seeing surges in account creations from citizens eager to participate in the landmark share sale.
The public subscription window provides a unique opportunity for everyday Nigerians to build long-term personal portfolios while participating in the nation’s industrial development. With strong interest from both local retail buyers and international investors, corporate leaders believe the successful public offering will serve as a model for listing major industrial infrastructure across Africa.
As the subscription period progresses, economic observers expect the transaction to fundamentally alter retail investment dynamics nationwide.
