The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), seeking greater transparency and accountability regarding political donations and the finances of political parties.

The suit challenges INEC’s handling of information relating to political contributions, spending limits and compliance with financial regulations governing political parties.

SERAP is asking the court to compel the electoral body to enforce provisions of the law relating to political financing and to make available details that would enable the public to scrutinise how political parties receive and utilise funds.

According to the organisation, transparency in political financing is essential to strengthening public confidence in the democratic process and preventing undue influence in electoral activities.

The group argued that citizens have a right to access information concerning political donations and party finances, especially where such information is necessary to promote accountability and uphold democratic standards.

SERAP further contended that effective oversight of political funding can help improve compliance with electoral laws and ensure that political parties operate within established legal limits.

The organisation urged the court to direct INEC to take appropriate steps to ensure that political parties fully disclose their financial records in line with relevant legal provisions.

The case is expected to test the scope of INEC’s responsibilities regarding the monitoring, disclosure and regulation of political party finances.

The legal action comes amid growing public interest in political funding and increasing calls for stronger transparency measures in Nigeria’s electoral system.
