African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore has said he would not create an official Office of the First Lady or allow security votes for state governors if elected president in 2027.

He made the remarks during an appearance on a television programme on Thursday.

Sowore argued that the position of First Lady is not provided for in the Nigerian Constitution. He stressed that becoming president would not end his marriage, but he would refuse to maintain an official First Lady’s office.

He maintained that women would still have a voice in his administration. However, he said he does not support an unconstitutional role that, in his view, wastes public funds that could be used for development projects.

The AAC candidate also linked the proposal to his plan to cut the cost of governance. He claimed that measures under his leadership could save the country about ₦4 trillion.

Sowore further promised to stop security votes allocated to governors. He said the funds should instead help meet state obligations such as the payment of workers’ salaries, though he acknowledged that some constitutional changes would be required to achieve this.
