Atiku Warns Against Planned 2027 Removal of Electricity Subsidy
ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government’s plan to remove electricity subsidy starting in 2027. In a video message titled “Let Nigerians breathe,” he urged the administration to reconsider the move.
Atiku argued that Nigerians are already struggling with high living costs and should not face further increases in electricity bills. He said ordinary citizens need relief rather than additional financial pressure.
He warned that if President Bola Tinubu is re-elected in 2027 and the subsidy is removed, Nigerians would have only themselves to blame. The former vice president framed the issue as part of a broader debate over the impact of current economic policies.
The comments follow an announcement by the Minister of Power that the government intends to phase out electricity subsidies as part of efforts to make the power sector more financially sustainable. Officials have said the transition would be gradual.
Atiku’s intervention adds to ongoing political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections, with the cost of living and energy prices remaining major concerns for many Nigerians.
