Tinubu Vows Nigeria Will Build, Keep Its Own Global Tech Giants
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that his administration is determined to build a new generation of globally competitive digital companies without forcing Nigerian entrepreneurs to relocate abroad, sharing the message in a statement posted through his official social media handle on Wednesday evening.
In the post, the President argued that Nigeria already possesses the talent, enterprise and ambition needed to build companies capable of competing anywhere in the world, and said it was government’s responsibility to ensure that citizens do not have to leave the country or depend on other jurisdictions to realise that potential.
He lamented that for too long, some of the country’s most promising young entrepreneurs have felt compelled to register their companies and intellectual property overseas simply to gain access to global capital and international markets, a trend he said he was no longer willing to accept.
Tinubu said his vision going forward is for the next generation of African technology, finance and service companies to be built, headquartered and scaled to the world directly from Nigerian soil, positioning the country as the base from which such firms expand into global markets rather than merely a market they eventually outgrow and leave behind.
The statement was accompanied by an image of a large scale infrastructure development, reinforcing the administration’s messaging around building the physical and institutional foundations needed to support homegrown technology and finance companies.
The post reflects a recurring theme in Tinubu’s recent public messaging, as the administration continues to court both local innovators and international investors with the argument that Nigeria’s economic reforms are creating a more favourable environment for businesses to scale from within the country rather than shift their headquarters to the United States, the United Kingdom or other foreign hubs, a pattern that has affected several Nigerian financial technology firms in the past.
