Azikel Refinery Takes Delivery of First Crude Distillation Unit

The Azikel Refinery in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has taken delivery of its first Crude Distillation Unit, marking a major milestone in the development of the long-awaited project. The equipment forms a key part of the facility’s core processing system.

Group President of Azikel Group, Dr Azibapu Eruani, received former President Goodluck Jonathan and other guests during a visit to the refinery site. The arrival of the unit signals that the project is moving into a critical phase of construction.

When completed, the refinery is expected to process 25,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The $1 billion facility is designed to produce petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, kerosene and other products, with the aim of boosting local refining capacity.

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, represented by his deputy, and the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, have both expressed support for the project. They described it as a catalyst for industrialisation, job creation and economic growth in the state.

Officials say the refinery is now at the finishing stage and nearing commissioning.

Stakeholders believe its eventual start-up will help reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and create opportunities for young people in the region.
