The Anambra State Government has rejected former Governor Peter Obi’s claim that he left more than ₦2.13 billion in an ecological fund account when he left office in 2014. The state says the First Bank account he referred to was not an ecological fund account and never held that amount.

Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Law Mefor, said the government obtained a certified printout of the account from its opening to the present. According to him, the account is an Internally Generated Revenue Consolidated Revenue Account, and records show no inflow or balance matching the figure cited by Obi.

The response follows Obi’s recent statement denying that his administration left behind significant debts. He had insisted that he left the ecological funds intact for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion project and that the state owed nothing in salaries, gratuities, pensions or contractor payments at the time of handover.

Mefor countered that several external loans remained after Obi left office, with a total outstanding balance of about ₦127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026. He also said the current administration had cleared around ₦22 billion in inherited gratuity arrears, while some legacy liabilities from earlier periods, including those involving teachers and Water Corporation staff, still exist.

The commissioner further rejected Obi’s claim of leaving more than ₦75 billion in savings, saying there were no records to support it. He called on the former governor to clarify where the disputed ecological funds were actually kept.
