The Nigeria Customs Service has seized several containers loaded with contraband goods valued at approximately ₦5.5 billion during operations at a port facility in Rivers State.

Customs officials said the containers were intercepted following intelligence-led inspections aimed at preventing the importation of prohibited and improperly declared items into the country.

According to the service, the seized goods included items that violated import regulations and posed economic and security concerns.

The operation formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border control measures, curb smuggling and ensure compliance with Nigeria’s trade and customs laws.

Customs authorities noted that the successful interception demonstrates the agency’s commitment to protecting the economy, supporting legitimate trade and preventing revenue losses.

Officials also warned importers and clearing agents against engaging in unlawful import activities, stressing that offenders would face appropriate sanctions under the law.

The seized containers remain in Customs custody pending further investigation and possible legal action against those connected to the shipment.

The service reaffirmed its determination to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations across ports and border points to combat smuggling and other forms of economic sabotage.
