Arsenal continued their unbeaten run with a 2-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, extending their perfect start to the season.

Mikel Arteta’s side controlled much of the game through possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Sunderland defence, with the hosts creating a difficult contest for the visitors.

Sunderland had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 55th minute after Ezri Konsa was penalised for bringing down Dan Ballard in the penalty area.

Enzo Le Fée stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya kept out his effort with a low dive to his left.

Arsenal responded almost immediately, taking the lead just 121 seconds later.

Bruno Guimarães, introduced at half-time, struck a superb 20-yard shot that clipped the crossbar before finding the back of the net.

The goal was Guimarães’ first for Arsenal and carried added significance because of his previous association with Newcastle United, one of Sunderland’s biggest rivals.

Sunderland refused to give up and continued searching for an equaliser, but Raya stood firm as Arsenal absorbed the pressure.

The goalkeeper produced another crucial intervention late in the match to preserve Arsenal’s advantage.

The visitors then put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time when Bukayo Saka converted a penalty after Reinildo Mandava fouled him inside the box.

Reinildo was subsequently shown a second yellow card and dismissed, leaving Sunderland to finish the match with 10 men.

The victory means Arsenal have now won all six of their competitive matches this season, including their opening four Premier League fixtures.

Although the Gunners were not at their most fluent in attack, their defensive organisation, Raya’s saves and moments of individual quality from Guimarães and Saka proved decisive in securing another three points.
