Mbappé Strikes as Madrid Open Champions League with 2-1 Win over Inter

Kylian Mbappé scored Real Madrid’s opener as they beat Inter Milan 2-1 at the Bernabéu on the first night of the Champions League league phase.

Inter started the brighter. Then a messy piece of defending gifted Madrid a chance. Mbappé finished first time in the 14th minute after pressure on Yann Bisseck and a pass from Brahim Díaz. The goal took him to 71 Champions League strikes, level with Raúl.

Nine minutes later Federico Valverde pressed goalkeeper Josep Martínez, stole the ball and made it 2-0. Madrid sat in. Inter kept coming without a finish until the 77th minute, when Carlos Augusto pulled one back from Lautaro Martínez’s cut-back.

The visitors never found an equaliser. Madrid take three points from Matchday 1 without looking fluent. Inter leave with a night defined by two errors and a late consolation.

Mbappé’s finish was the headline the home crowd wanted after a missed penalty in the league. It was one goal, not two.

Valverde supplied the insurance. The table, for one evening, does not care who scored the second.
