Abia State University, Uturu, has lifted the suspension of an Economics lecturer, Prof. Nnamdi Nwaeze, following a request by the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The university conveyed the decision in a letter dated September 3, 2026, and signed by its Acting Registrar, Dr Joy Nwankwo.

In the letter titled “Lifting of Suspension,” the university said Nwaeze’s suspension was being lifted with immediate effect but stressed that the decision did not affect an ongoing investigation into the matter.

The university stated that the investigative panel constituted to examine the allegations against the lecturer would continue its work, with its final report still awaited.

Nwaeze was suspended indefinitely after he criticised conditions at the university in a Facebook post, raising concerns over issues including low salaries and delays in the payment of salaries and allowances.

His suspension subsequently led to industrial action by the ABSU chapter of ASUU, which listed his reinstatement among its demands for ending the strike.

The Abia State Government had previously described the matter as an internal issue of the university and distanced itself from the lecturer’s suspension.

Governor Alex Otti, however, later met some of the demands raised by the union.

Confirming the lecturer’s reinstatement on Saturday, ASUU-ABSU Chairman, Prof. Chidi Mba, said the union would continue to address the matter through administrative channels.

“Yes, the University has lifted the suspension. However, I cannot comment on the content. We are handling it administratively,” Mba said.
