The Jigawa State Police Command has impounded 27 vehicles and prosecuted their drivers for alleged violations of road traffic regulations. The action forms part of the ongoing Operation Velvet aimed at improving road safety across the state.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Shi’isu Adam said the operation is being intensified under Commissioner of Police Tijjani Murtala. It seeks to enforce strict compliance with traffic laws and regulations throughout Jigawa State.

According to the police, the intercepted vehicles were found to have committed offences such as overloading, driving without valid driver’s licences and using unauthorised tinted permits. The affected motorists were apprehended in line with the law, and their vehicles were impounded to allow legal proceedings to continue.

The drivers have been charged before the appropriate court for prosecution. Adam stressed that Operation Velvet is not targeted at any particular individual or group. It is designed to promote discipline among motorists and protect lives and property on the roads.

The police urged motorists to always carry valid driver’s licences, avoid overloading and comply with vehicle registration and roadworthiness requirements. The operation will continue and be extended to major towns, highways, feeder roads and other strategic locations across the state.
