Pro-Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa has appealed his six-year prison sentence for terrorism-related offences in Finland, while prosecutors are seeking a longer jail term.

Ekpa was convicted by the Päijät-Häme District Court in September 2025 after being found guilty of inciting terrorism and participating in the activities of a terrorist group.

Finnish prosecutors have challenged the sentence, arguing that the six-year term imposed on Ekpa was insufficient given the nature of the offences. The Court of Appeal is expected to consider the case in the coming weeks.

Ekpa was arrested in Finland in November 2024 and subsequently prosecuted over activities linked to the separatist movement advocating an independent Biafra.

The district court found that he had used his substantial social media following between August 2021 and November 2024 to encourage violence and heighten tensions in Nigeria’s South-East.

The court also found that he had an influential position within the militant separatist movement and had facilitated the supply of weapons, explosives and ammunition to groups in the region through his network.

In addition to the terrorism convictions, Ekpa was found guilty of aggravated tax fraud and an offence under Finland’s Attorneys Act.

If the prosecution succeeds in its appeal, Ekpa could receive a longer prison sentence.
