Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has congratulated the government and people of Abia State on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation.

Abia was carved out of the former Imo State on August 27, 1991, by the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida.

In a statement on Thursday, Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, praised successive administrations and residents for maintaining peace and strengthening security across the state.

He described peace and security as essential foundations for economic development, investment and improved living standards.

The Deputy Speaker also acknowledged the contributions of past military and civilian administrations, saying the progress recorded in Abia over the years was the result of sustained efforts by successive leaders.

Kalu particularly commended Governor Alex Otti’s administration for its focus on security and governance, highlighting the establishment of an Air Force office in Umuahia as one of the steps taken to strengthen security in the state.

He further praised the state government for fostering cooperation across political lines, citing the issuance of Certificates of Occupancy for federal projects, including the National Industrial Court, Renewed Hope Housing Projects and recently approved federal educational institutions.

According to him, such projects, alongside other ongoing developments, could stimulate investment, create employment opportunities and improve infrastructure across the state.

Kalu said stronger collaboration between the federal and Abia State governments would position the state to benefit further from development initiatives.

He also acknowledged efforts to clear outstanding pensions and gratuities owed to former workers, stressing that government has a responsibility to honour those who served the state.

The Deputy Speaker described Abia’s 35-year journey as one of resilience and progress and urged residents and leaders to sustain the state’s momentum in peace, unity, good governance and service delivery.

He wished the people of Abia a successful celebration of the state’s 35th anniversary.
