The Ondo State House of Assembly says moves to remove its Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, from office remain ongoing despite reconciliation efforts involving Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and leaders of the All Progressives Congress.

The Assembly spokesperson, Olatunji Ifabiyi, disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday, dismissing reports that the lawmakers had abandoned the impeachment process.

Ifabiyi maintained that the lawmakers remained determined to remove Oladiji as Speaker, despite the governor’s efforts to resolve the dispute.

He said discussions between the governor and some members of the Assembly had not halted the process, insisting that there was no plan to reverse the lawmakers’ position.

However, Oladiji rejected the claim, saying there was no impeachment proceeding against him because the disagreements that triggered the crisis had been resolved.

The Speaker said Governor Aiyedatiwa and other APC leaders had intervened in the matter and that lawmakers were expected to proceed with their parliamentary meeting.

Oladiji also dismissed an earlier incident involving three youth leaders at the Assembly complex, explaining that they had visited to obtain recruitment forms.

According to him, some lawmakers questioned the presence of the visitors, prompting him to clarify that they were his guests and had previously visited the Assembly.

He said the visitors did not harass anyone and that the disagreement over their presence was eventually resolved.

Oladiji consequently maintained that there had been no impeachment notice or formal impeachment process against him.

The conflicting positions from the Assembly spokesperson and the Speaker leave the status of the reported impeachment move unclear, with reconciliation efforts by the governor and APC leadership continuing alongside the lawmakers’ opposing claims.
