Chelsea booked their place in the Carabao Cup third round with a 2-0 win over League One side, Luton Town at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night. The result gave Xabi Alonso his first competitive home victory as Chelsea manager.

Alonso named a strong side despite the cup setting, including Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Reece James and Estêvão. Danny Welbeck made his debut up front, while 21-year-old goalkeeper Mike Penders started in place of Robert Sánchez.

Chelsea dominated the first half but failed to convert their chances. Palmer and Estêvão both missed good opportunities, and Rogers hit the bar with the last kick of the half. Luton, who arrived with a long unbeaten run, defended stubbornly and limited the Premier League side to half-chances before the interval.

The breakthrough came five minutes after the restart. Estêvão linked with Malo Gusto on the right, and Gusto delivered an accurate cross for Welbeck to head home at the far post. The 35-year-old’s debut goal settled the contest and opened his Chelsea account.

The second goal arrived in the 79th minute. Estêvão cut inside and drove a low shot towards the far corner. The effort struck Luton defender Hakeem Odoffin and went in. Estêvão was withdrawn shortly afterwards.

Chelsea saw out the remaining minutes without alarm. They will face Leeds United in the third round. For Luton, the defeat ended a 16-match unbeaten run across all competitions.
