Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has officially opened the newly remodelled and digitally equipped 80-bed Obingwa General Hospital in Mgboko, the headquarters of Obingwa Local Government Area.

The facility has been renamed after the late human rights activist Chima Ubani.

The commissioning took place on Tuesday. Otti said the project forms part of his administration’s push to modernise public healthcare and rebuild trust in government-owned medical centres.

He noted that better access to quality care would help reduce avoidable deaths among mothers and newborns.

The hospital features a healing garden, a technology-driven data system, real-time links with other facilities, modern laboratory and scan tools, a fully equipped theatre, eye-care units, observation rooms and a renewable energy setup for steady power.

Otti stressed that the centre will operate 24 hours a day, every day of the week, and serve anyone who needs medical attention regardless of their background.

He explained that renaming the hospital after Chima Ubani honours the activist’s courage, compassion and lifelong fight for justice and the welfare of ordinary people.

Ubani was a former Students’ Union President at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and later served as Executive Director of the Civil Liberties Organisation.

Health Commissioner Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche said the facility is part of more than 300 health projects completed in three years, including the upgrading of 277 primary health centres. Officials noted that the hospital was previously in a poor state with no patients, drugs or equipment, but has now been fully transformed into a working digital medical centre.
