The Lagos State Government has disclosed that it has paid N168.2 billion to more than 48,000 retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme since 2007.

The government made the disclosure while responding to concerns raised by some retirees over pension payments in the state.

According to the state, the Lagos State Pension Commission has consistently implemented pension obligations and welfare programmes for retired public servants.

The government stated that more than N92 billion in accrued rights had been paid to over 25,000 retirees between May 2019 and August 2026.

It explained that accrued rights include both gratuity and pension benefits owed to retiring officers.

The state government noted that it increased pension contribution rates in 2020, raising employer contributions to 10 per cent and employee contributions to eight per cent in an effort to strengthen the pension scheme.

It also highlighted a N5 billion payment made to 1,963 retirees in July 2024, which it said helped clear outstanding pension backlogs under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

According to the government, special arrangements have also been introduced to accelerate gratuity payments for pensioners facing health challenges.

The state further stated that welfare programmes are organised periodically to provide support for retirees amid economic challenges.

For retirees under the Defined Benefits Scheme, the government said wage awards and pension increases have been implemented to improve their welfare.

The government added that more than N4 billion had been paid to 1,862 retirees in 2026, with additional payments scheduled for other beneficiaries.

It maintained that the various interventions reflect its commitment to ensuring the welfare, dignity and financial security of retired public servants in the state.
