Danjuma Shekwolo, chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, has sparked controversy after saying residents must support the All Progressives Congress or leave the area council.

Shekwolo made the statement in a video, arguing that residents who benefit from the interventions of President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike should not oppose the APC.

He said he would not tolerate residents who accept government projects and support but later oppose the ruling party during elections.

The council chairman insisted that residents must choose between supporting the APC and leaving the area council.

His comments have attracted strong reactions, with critics questioning the right of a public official to demand political loyalty from residents.

Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the statement, describing it as an attack on residents’ freedom of association and political choice.

The organisation called on security agencies to intervene, stressing that political affiliation or voting preference should not determine whether a Nigerian is allowed to live in a particular community.

It also warned that such remarks could encourage violence against residents who choose to support opposition parties.

Amnesty urged authorities to hold the council chairman accountable and protect residents from intimidation over their political choices.

Shekwolo was elected Kuje Area Council chairman on the APC platform in February, defeating the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the election.

The controversy has renewed concerns over political intimidation and the need to protect citizens’ freedom to choose their preferred political parties and candidates.
