Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has criticised the backlash against a staff member of United Bank for Africa following a recent incident involving the bank employee.

Sowore described the public reaction against the worker as excessive and called for greater consideration of the employee’s mental and emotional wellbeing.

He urged members of the public to avoid subjecting the staff member to further harassment, noting that the individual should be treated with dignity despite the controversy surrounding the incident.

The activist also called on UBA management to provide appropriate psychosocial support for the affected employee.

According to him, employees who find themselves at the centre of public controversy require support rather than further pressure that could worsen their emotional state.

Sowore said the incident should be handled with compassion and understanding rather than allowing social media reactions to cause additional harm.

He also criticised the tendency of Nigerians to quickly condemn individuals involved in controversial incidents without considering the circumstances surrounding their actions.

The activist urged the bank and other relevant stakeholders to prioritise the welfare of the staff member while addressing the issues arising from the incident.

He further appealed to members of the public to refrain from cyberbullying and other forms of harassment directed at the employee.

Sowore maintained that protecting workers from unnecessary psychological pressure should be taken seriously, particularly when an incident attracts widespread public attention.

He encouraged UBA to ensure that the affected staff member receives the necessary professional and emotional assistance.

The activist concluded by urging Nigerians to show greater empathy and responsibility when reacting to incidents involving individuals on social media.
