Commercial Paper Market Records 244% Growth Within One Month

Nigeria’s commercial paper market witnessed a remarkable surge in activity, recording a 244 per cent increase in issuances within a single month as companies increasingly turned to short-term debt instruments to meet their funding needs.

The sharp rise highlights growing confidence among corporate issuers and investors in the market, which has become an important source of financing amid evolving economic conditions and changing credit demands. Recent data showed that businesses raised significantly more funds through commercial papers compared to the previous month, reflecting stronger participation across multiple sectors.

Market analysts attributed the increase to the attractiveness of commercial papers as a flexible and relatively efficient financing option. The instrument allows companies to secure short-term funding while offering investors competitive returns in a high-interest-rate environment.

The development also underscores the growing depth of Nigeria’s debt market, with more firms exploring alternatives to traditional bank borrowing. Several corporate entities have recently launched or expanded commercial paper programmes to support working capital requirements, operational expenses, and business expansion plans.

Industry stakeholders believe the strong performance of the commercial paper market reflects improving investor appetite for quality short-term debt securities. They noted that the trend could continue if macroeconomic conditions remain supportive and issuers maintain strong credit profiles.

Experts further stated that the increasing use of commercial papers is helping to diversify funding sources available to businesses while contributing to the overall development of Nigeria’s capital market.

With corporate fundraising activities maintaining momentum, the segment is expected to remain a key component of the country’s financial ecosystem in the months ahead.
