24 Killed in Suspected Reprisal Attack on Bin-Per Community, Plateau
At least 24 people have reportedly been killed in a fresh attack on Bin-Per community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, August 18, 2026, reportedly saw armed assailants invade the community and attack residents in their homes.
According to accounts from survivors and local sources, the attackers operated during the night, leaving several residents dead and others injured.
The casualty figure was reported at 24 by survivors who spoke to the Agence France-Presse (AFP), while some Nigerian media reports initially put the number of people killed at more than 20.
The latest violence has heightened tension in the community and raised fears of further attacks and reprisals in the area.
The incident is reportedly connected to a recent cycle of violence involving communities in the Mangu area.
AFP reported that two herders were killed in the area the previous week, after which a suspected reprisal attack was carried out in nearby Maitimbe before the latest attack on Bin-Per.
However, the identities of the perpetrators of the Bin-Per attack have not been independently established.
Some local accounts have described the attackers as suspected Fulani bandits, but security authorities have not officially confirmed the identity or affiliation of those responsible.
The latest incident comes amid continuing security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where communities have experienced recurring attacks linked to farmer-herder tensions and armed violence.
Residents in affected communities have repeatedly called for stronger security measures to protect lives and property and prevent further escalation of violence.
The killings have also renewed concerns that the latest attack could trigger another round of reprisal attacks if urgent steps are not taken to restore calm.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no comprehensive official statement confirming the final death toll or announcing arrests in connection with the attack.
Further details are expected as security agencies and community leaders continue efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
