Troops Intercept 84 Cattle, Probe Farm Attacks in Plateau Communities
Troops of Operation Enduring Peace responded to multiple incidents of farm destruction and cattle grazing in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State on August 16, 2026.
The incidents occurred in four villages across three districts, involving machete-wielding attackers who destroyed maize crops and herds of cattle found grazing on cultivated farmland without herders present.
At Dambwash Village in Manguna District, troops from Sector 5 arrived at about 8:40 a.m. following a distress call.
Security personnel discovered that unknown individuals had used machetes to cut down maize crops on the farm.
Investigations have commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible, according to security sources who spoke to our correspondent.
A second attack unfolded at Danbukur Village in Butura District around 10:11 a.m., prompting troops deployed at PLASU to respond.
The assailants employed similar tactics, cutting down crops with machetes before fleeing the scene.
Security sources explained that troops assessed the extent of the damage and are working to invite Fulani herders in the general area for further questioning.
Meanwhile, at Fokkos Village in Tarangol District, troops deployed at GGC responded to a report at about 7:10 a.m. and intercepted 42 cattle grazing on a farm without any herder present.
Security personnel subsequently invited both the farmers and the owners of the cattle for an amicable resolution of the dispute.
A fourth incident occurred at Trangol Village in Bokkos LGA, where troops responding to a distress report found another 42 cattle grazing on farmland after the herder reportedly fled upon sighting the security forces.
The livestock from both locations—totaling 84 cattle—were moved to the troops’ location pending settlement between the affected parties.
No arrests have been reported in connection with the machete attacks, and authorities have not released an estimate on the total acreage or monetary value of the crops destroyed.
Operation Enduring Peace has previously identified Captain Polycarp Oteh as its spokesperson, though no official statement has been issued specifically addressing these August 16 incidents.
Security sources confirmed that patrols and investigations across the affected communities have been intensified to prevent further destruction and curb escalating farmer-herder tensions.
“The troops remain committed to engaging relevant stakeholders to resolve disputes while maintaining a strong security presence across vulnerable communities in Plateau State,” a security source told our correspondent.
