PSC Eulogises Police for Professional Conduct During Osun Election

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has praised the Nigeria Police Force for what it described as professional, orderly and cordial conduct during the August 15, 2026, Osun State governorship election.

The commission, in an interim report released on Sunday, said its monitoring teams found police officers across the state to be generally courteous, accessible and professional while performing their electoral duties.

The monitoring exercise covered polling units across Osun Central, Osun East and Osun West senatorial districts, as well as all 30 Local Government Areas of the state.

According to the PSC spokesperson, Torty Njoku, the assessment focused on police deployment, compliance with electoral guidelines, professionalism, collaboration with other security agencies and the overall conduct of officers during the election.

The commission said police deployment was generally adequate, with an average of four officers assigned to each polling unit across the state.

It recorded an average of three officers per polling unit in Osun Central, while Osun East and Osun West had about five officers each.

The PSC also noted the deployment of personnel from several other security and emergency agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Services, Nigeria Immigration Service, Federal Road Safety Corps and Federal Fire Service.

The Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Correctional Service, Defence Intelligence Agency and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission were also involved in the security arrangements.

The commission said the agencies worked alongside the police at polling locations and the Election Joint Operations Control Room, describing the inter-agency cooperation as cordial and a significant factor in the peaceful conduct of the election.

The leader of the PSC Monitoring Team, DIG (Dr) Taiwo Lakanu (rtd.), also expressed satisfaction with the performance of police personnel during the exercise.

Lakanu commended Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for the deployment strategy adopted for the election.

He also recognised the contributions of DIG Isyaku Mohammed, the Election DIG, and CP Samuel Erale Etaifo, the Election CP, alongside other senior officers assigned to the exercise.

The PSC said its teams observed that officers across the three senatorial districts maintained order, responded appropriately to inquiries and conducted themselves professionally.

The commission said it would continue to exercise oversight over the police to ensure that officers maintain established professional standards whenever deployed for electoral duties.
