The Kogi State Police Command have arrested a man, identified as Jacob Irewa, for allegedly attempting to kill his wife, Berida Irawo, by setting her ablaze in Lokoja.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Oworo Estate, Felele area of the state capital, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat.

Afusat said the police received a report of the incident at about 8:30 p.m., prompting the B Division Surveillance Team in Felele to mobilise to the scene, where Irewa was arrested.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the incident followed a domestic dispute after the victim allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she believed he no longer used, without his permission.

The suspect reportedly threatened his wife before allegedly obtaining petrol from his motorcycle and setting her on fire.

The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele.

According to the police, Irewa admitted during questioning to setting his wife ablaze.

The command said it had commenced a detailed investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather additional evidence.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the alleged attack and reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling violence, particularly domestic violence.

Kankarofi urged residents to resolve domestic disagreements through lawful means and refrain from actions that could threaten lives.

The police said the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
