No Successful Military Coup Occurred in Nigeria Without Civilian Support, Says IBB

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd), has declared that every successful military coup in Nigeria’s history received key backing and collaboration from civilians.

Speaking during a radio interview in Minna as part of activities commemorating his birthday, the former leader disclosed that affluent civilian figures historically played crucial roles in financing and facilitating military takeovers.

Reflecting on past events during his administration, General Babangida revisited the 1985 plot to overthrow his government, detailing how his former associate and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, General Mamman Vatsa, denied involvement when initially questioned.

He explained that despite their shared history and personal friendship, an investigative military panel established to probe the plot subsequently uncovered evidence linking Vatsa to the conspiracy, leading to his execution under military law.

The former head of state also addressed current national challenges, urging citizens to remain patient and support ongoing administration efforts aimed at achieving long-term economic and national stability.
