Troops Restore Calm In Mangu After Fulani, Mwaghavul Youth Clash Leaves Three Dead

Troops of Sector 8, Operation Enduring Peace, have brought an end to a violent clash between suspected Fulani and Mwaghavul youths at Jwak Maitumbi community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, an incident that left three people dead.

A military source said the confrontation broke out at about 7:35 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, following an earlier dispute between youths from the two communities.

The clash escalated into sustained gunfire, prompting the deployment of troops who moved swiftly to contain the situation. According to the source, the soldiers used superior firepower to force both sides to withdraw from the area before conducting clearance operations, which were supported by drone surveillance to confirm the area had been cleared of combatants.

The three fatalities were identified as one member of the local community and two Fulani herders, while another local resident sustained injuries in the violence. Security forces have reportedly continued operations in the area since the incident in a bid to maintain calm.

The clash is the latest in a long running pattern of communal and herder related violence in Plateau State, particularly across Mangu, Riyom, Barkin Ladi and Bassa local government areas, where tit for tat attacks between Fulani herders and farming communities have persisted for months despite repeated military interventions under Operation Enduring Peace.
