Mr P is dealing with a wave of online criticism following the release of his new single, “I Love You Because,” with a significant number of fans dismissing the record as underwhelming.

The former P-Square star put the song out on August 7 as part of the rollout for his upcoming solo album, OG Forever. The accompanying music video, which features Nollywood actors Stan Nze and Blessing Nze, arrived days later, and it was Mr P’s own announcement of the video on X, paired with a simple prompt asking fans for their thoughts, that set off a fresh round of commentary.

The reception was largely harsh. Several fans argued the record simply wasn’t strong enough to hold up, with some framing their criticism in more analytical terms around what makes a song commercially relatable, while others were far blunter, essentially telling the singer to shelve the track and questioning whether his recent releases have connected with listeners the way his older work once did.

The timing has made the backlash sting more than it otherwise might. Mr P’s family has been dominating entertainment headlines for weeks, with the singer airing escalating allegations of financial misconduct against his brother, music executive Jude Okoye, over earnings from the P-Square years — claims Jude has denied.

With that dispute still playing out publicly, a number of fans watching Mr P push new solo content questioned the timing, with some suggesting he was using the moment to draw attention back to his own career while his family’s troubles dominate the news cycle.

Mr P hasn’t directly responded to the criticism of the song itself. He has, however, pushed back before against unrelated jabs this year, including comments about his age and relevance as an artist, pointing out that older international stars rarely face the same level of scrutiny for similar behaviour.

Despite the pushback online, “I Love You Because” remains part of the promotional run for OG Forever, Mr P’s second solo studio album, which is expected to land later in 2026.
