Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazil international, Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, landing one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders in a deal worth a guaranteed £75 million ($101m).

The Brazilian, who had two years remaining on his contract at St James’ Park, was given permission to travel for a medical before the move was finalised.

Photos from the Gunners’ Sobha Realty Training Centre show the 28-year-old signing his new contract flanked by manager Mikel Arteta and the club’s sporting hierarchy, formally sealing his switch from Tyneside to north London.

The move represents a major statement from Arsenal, who had been left exposed in midfield during their Champions League final defeat to PSG, a game in which Mikel Arteta’s side were restricted to just 25 percent possession before losing on penalties.

Guimaraes’ arrival gives Arteta a formidable central trio alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, with the Brazilian expected to share defensive midfield duties with Rice and offer Arteta greater tactical flexibility across matches.

Question marks had lingered over the fee, with Newcastle initially holding out for closer to £100 million for a player who turns 29 in November, but the two clubs eventually settled well below that mark.

The transfer continues a busy summer of investment for Arsenal, who are pushing to build on their first Premier League title in 22 years last season by strengthening a squad already being tipped to challenge on every front.

For Newcastle, the departure marks a significant blow. The club had already lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer, and Guimaraes’ exit leaves a considerable gap in a midfield that had repeatedly bailed the team out of difficult games last season.

The sale comes at a turbulent time for the Magpies, who are also adjusting to boardroom and coaching changes at St James’ Park following Eddie Howe’s decision to step down as manager by mutual consent after five years in charge.
