A severe communal conflict erupted between the Agasha and Asukunya communities in Benue State, leaving dozens of residents injured, homes destroyed, and commercial property looted in a sudden escalation of local tension.

The violent dispute reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over land usage and burial rights. According to local sources, members of the Agasha community who had previously purchased land within Asukunya territory attempted to bury a deceased family member on the property.

The move was met with immediate resistance from Asukunya residents, who rejected the burial within their boundary, triggering a violent confrontation between youth from both sides.

The clash quickly escalated into widespread destruction. Perpetrators armed with cutlasses and blunt weapons inflicted injuries on several individuals while setting fire to residential structures, vehicles, and business shops.

In addition to widespread structural damage and arson, shops were looted, and livestock was killed during the violent outbreak.

Unfiltered Reporting’s correspondent Abdulrazak who witnessed the crisis unfold, observed scenes of panic across the affected areas as families scrambled for safety amidst rising flames and conflict.

Following the outbreak of violence, the Local Government Council Chairman arrived at the scene alongside a heavy detachment of Nigeria Police Force personnel to restore order and de-escalate tensions between the warring factions. Security personnel have since been deployed to strategic locations to prevent further clashes.

Despite the security presence, widespread panic persists across the communities. Fearing reprisal attacks, scores of residents carrying personal belongings such as mats, bedding, and livestock have fled the area to seek refuge in neighboring settlements.

Authorities have urged both communities to maintain calm and refrain from further acts of violence as conflict resolution efforts and investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
