Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu has warned Nigerian Army personnel against engaging in drug and substance abuse.

He said such acts could undermine their ability to perform their duties effectively and pose a threat to national security.

The warning was given on Wednesday during a four-day seminar on transformational leadership, post-traumatic stress disorder, and drug and substance abuse held at the 4 Special Forces Command in Doma, Nasarawa State.

Shaibu was represented by the Commander of Army Headquarters Garrison, Maj-Gen. John Lar.

The army chief stressed that the Nigerian Army has zero tolerance for drug and substance abuse. He described it as that weakens unit cohesion and reduces operational effectiveness.

He urged commanders at all levels to intensify efforts against the problem within barracks and formations.

Shaibu also addressed mental health challenges, noting that post-traumatic stress disorder is not a sign of weakness but a battle injury of the mind. He reaffirmed the army’s commitment to providing support, early intervention, and professional counselling for affected personnel.

The seminar forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership skills, preserve troop morale, and ensure mental readiness. Officials said the focus remains on building a professional, adaptable, and resilient force capable of meeting the demands of modern military operations.
