Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has inaugurated a new Sickle Cell Centre and unveiled an office complex for the Kano State Centre for Disease Control.

The facilities are aimed at improving specialised healthcare and strengthening the state’s response to disease outbreaks.

The Sickle Cell Centre will offer free diagnosis, counselling, treatment, follow-up care, and health education for people living with the condition. Yusuf said the centre would provide comprehensive support under one roof to improve patients’ wellbeing.

The newly commissioned disease control complex is expected to enhance surveillance and emergency response to epidemic-prone diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and meningitis. The governor prayed that the facility would be put to effective use for the benefit of residents.

Yusuf also flagged off the distribution of 300 digital blood pressure monitors to public servants and political appointees. He explained that the move was prompted by concerns over sudden deaths linked to hypertension and was meant to encourage regular health checks.

In addition, the governor opened the distribution of free maternal and Accident and Emergency commodities, along with new hospital bed sheets, at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.

Health officials noted that maternal mortality in the state has dropped significantly due to sustained interventions.
