Woman in Tears as Fire Guts Rivers Family Home After Fire Service Allegedly Demanded N400,000 to Respond
A woman was left in tears after a fire razed her family’s home in Rivers State, with a viral video capturing the aftermath of a blaze that reportedly burned for about four hours before it was brought under control.
According to the report, the Rivers State Fire Service allegedly demanded N400,000 before agreeing to respond to the emergency, rejected the family’s counter-offer of N150,000, and ultimately never arrived at the scene.
The footage, which has since circulated widely online, shows the extent of the destruction, with the woman visibly distraught as she surveyed what remained of her family’s property.
The family is said to have watched helplessly as the fire consumed their home over several hours, with no firefighting intervention arriving despite their attempts to negotiate a response from the service.
The allegations, if confirmed, point to a troubling pattern of demands for upfront payment before emergency responders will act, a practice that has repeatedly drawn public criticism in various parts of Nigeria and left families exposed to prolonged, unchecked fire damage.
As of the time of this report, the Rivers State Fire Service has not issued a public response to the specific claims made in the video.
The incident adds to growing public concern over the state of emergency response services across the country, with residents in several states frequently voicing frustration over delayed or absent firefighting support during critical incidents.
Calls have continued to mount for state governments to strengthen funding and oversight of fire services to ensure timely, no-cost intervention during emergencies.
