Ondo Community in Benue State Flee over Suspected Herdsmen Attack on Settlement

Residents of Ondo community in Ugboju, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, have fled their homes following a fresh attack by suspected armed herdsmen.

The attackers stormed the area in the early hours of Tuesday, opening fire and causing panic among the people. Many families left their belongings behind as they ran for safety in neighbouring areas.

The latest incident comes barely two days after suspected herdsmen invaded Otukpo-Nobi community in the same local government area, where more than 18 people were reportedly killed.

A native of Ondo community and Labour Party House of Assembly candidate for the 2027 elections, Hon. Jimmy Nart, confirmed the ongoing attack in a message to his family, urging them to protect themselves.

As of the time of the report, the exact number of casualties from the attack could not be independently verified. Efforts to get an official reaction from the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, did not respond to inquiries.

The situation in the community remained tense, with many residents still fleeing for fear of further violence.

Benue State has continued to face repeated clashes between farmers and herders, leading to loss of lives and displacement of people. The recent attacks have heightened fears among residents and raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures in the area. Local leaders are calling for urgent government intervention to restore peace and protect vulnerable communities.

The state government is expected to provide support to the displaced residents who have taken shelter with relatives or in temporary locations. The Ondo community attack has once again drawn attention to the persistent security challenges in Benue State. Many hope that authorities will take stronger action to prevent further bloodshed and bring lasting peace to the region.
