Civil Society Groups Demand Clear Roadmap for Ajaokuta Steel Company Revival

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations has called on the Federal Government to release a transparent implementation plan for the revival of the Ajaokuta Steel Company.

The group, known as the Coalition for the Revival of Ajaokuta Steel Company, said Nigerians deserve to know the concrete steps being taken to restore the long-abandoned steel plant.

They stressed that the country cannot afford further delays in reviving this important industrial project.

The organisations acknowledged the government’s efforts to attract foreign investment through international engagements. However, they warned that such efforts must lead to actual progress and not just announcements. The coalition said past promises have often faded without results, leaving the steel company in its current state of neglect.

The groups described Ajaokuta Steel Company as a symbol of Nigeria’s unrealised industrial potential. They believe its revival should be a national priority to support economic diversification, create jobs, and reduce dependence on imported steel. The coalition urged the government to publish a detailed roadmap with clear timelines and measurable outcomes for the project.

They also called for compliance with procurement laws, promotion of local content, technology transfer, and a financing framework that can be independently monitored.

The organisations expressed readiness to work with the government, the National Assembly, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful revival of the steel company.

As 2027 approaches, the coalition said Nigerians will judge the government based on tangible achievements rather than promises. They appealed to the authorities to translate investment talks into real progress at Ajaokuta.

The statement reflects growing public demand for accountability and action on key national projects that can drive industrial growth and development.
