17-Year-Old Football Fan Killed by Lorry During World Cup Celebrations in France
A 17-year-old girl was killed after being crushed by a lorry while celebrating France’s World Cup quarter-final victory over Morocco in the northern French town of Aulnoye-Aymeries.
The teenager was among thousands of ecstatic supporters filling the streets following France’s 2-0 win on Thursday when she, along with other fans, climbed onto the side of a moving lorry.
According to a local police spokesperson, she lost her footing, fell onto the road, and was run over by the same vehicle. Emergency responders made attempts to revive her, but she was tragically declared dead at the scene shortly after midnight.
French authorities have opened a formal investigation into the fatal accident. The lorry driver has been arrested and will undergo mandatory testing for alcohol and drug use as part of the ongoing probe. Additionally, three witnesses who suffered minor injuries and severe symptoms of shock were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
French security officials noted that while authorities had anticipated potential post-match unrest, the street celebrations across the country were largely peaceful, with only ten arrests recorded in Paris. However, local administrators lamented that climbing onto moving vehicles has become an increasingly common and dangerous trend during major football celebrations despite repeated public safety warnings.
