Obi Support Group Demands Probe Over Alleged State Harassment, Intimidation
A key support group backing the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has officially called for a comprehensive investigation into mounting allegations of systemic intimidation, harassment, and structural sabotage directed at the opposition leader.
The demand follows a series of public disclosures by Obi, who recently raised the alarm over what he described as deliberate, daily efforts by state apparatuses to frustrate his private businesses and personal life. In a recent interview, the former Anambra State governor expressed deep concerns over his safety ahead of the 2027 general elections, revealing that the hostile political climate has escalated to a point where even close associates and ordinary citizens fear being publicly identified with him due to potential state backlash. He cited specific incidents, including an unprovoked airport security profiling event where his personal vehicle was singled out and locked by officials.
Reacting swiftly to these developments, the Obi support network released a statement condemning the perceived slide into authoritarianism and the systemic silencing of dissenting voices. The group maintained that a thriving democracy relies unconditionally on the safety of opposition figures and the freedom of expression. They urged relevant national security agencies to transparently probe these claims of harassment, while calling on both the domestic public and international democratic monitors to closely watch the situation and protect the rule of law.
