Register for Final Evacuation FG Urges Nigerians in South Africa
The Federal Government has urged Nigerians still in South Africa to register for the final evacuation flight, warning that the last aircraft is expected to arrive in the country on July 10.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu made the appeal while providing an update on the ongoing evacuation of Nigerians affected by recent xenophobic attacks.
She said the evacuation exercise, initially scheduled to end on June 30, was extended on the directive of President Bola Tinubu to allow more citizens the opportunity to return home.
According to the minister, the fourth evacuation flight landed in Lagos on July 3 with 268 returnees, bringing the total number of Nigerians evacuated in four operations to nearly 900.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu also confirmed the deaths of two Nigerians, identified as Musa Yunana Joe and Charles Iroegbu, during the attacks.
She called on South African authorities to investigate the killings and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The minister stressed that while damaged properties and lost investments could be replaced, lives could not, urging Nigerians who remain in South Africa to carefully assess the security situation and take advantage of the remaining evacuation flights.
