New Leadership Team Takes Over Gaza as Hamas Backs Down

The militant group Hamas has announced it is dissolving the committee that has governed the Gaza Strip for nearly twenty years. This major decision is meant to clear the way for a neutral, professional group of leaders—known as a technocratic committee—to step in and manage day-to-day civilian life in the area.

Hamas had official control of Gaza since 2007. However, following a ceasefire agreement signed in October 2025, the group has faced heavy pressure to hand over its governing powers. To start this process, the head of Hamas’s emergency government committee officially stepped down today, signaling that they are ready to pass their duties to the new leadership, called the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG).

Even though the political leaders are stepping down, Hamas mentioned that regular workers—like office clerks and technical staff—will stay at their jobs. This is to make sure that basic public services for ordinary people do not completely stop during the change.

Meanwhile, the new committee of professionals is waiting to enter the territory and fully take charge of the government offices.

While this is a big step for how Gaza is run, it is mostly a symbolic move for now. Major arguments still need to be settled behind the scenes, especially regarding when and how Hamas will give up its weapons. Representatives from different Palestinian groups are heading to Egypt this week to talk with international peace mediators to figure out the next steps.

For regular citizens, this change brings a mix of hope and uncertainty. The goal of bringing in a neutral team of experts is to make it easier for international aid to flow into the region and help rebuild broken communities. Everyone is now watching closely to see if this new team can successfully take over and bring some much-needed stability to the area.
