Veritas University to Adopt Ethical AI Governance Framework

Veritas University, Abuja, has announced plans to adopt an Ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance Framework aimed at promoting the responsible use of AI in teaching, research and institutional administration.

The university said the initiative is designed to ensure that artificial intelligence technologies are deployed in a manner that upholds transparency, accountability, fairness and respect for human rights while safeguarding academic integrity and data privacy.

The proposed framework will establish guidelines for the ethical development, adoption and use of AI tools across the institution.

It will also provide mechanisms for assessing AI systems before deployment, monitoring their use and addressing potential risks such as algorithmic bias, misinformation, data breaches and intellectual property concerns.

University authorities noted that the framework would support staff, students and researchers in leveraging AI responsibly while maintaining human oversight in decision-making processes.

The move comes amid growing global efforts by higher education institutions to establish governance structures for artificial intelligence as the technology becomes increasingly integrated into learning, research and university operations.

Experts say AI governance frameworks are becoming essential in universities to ensure compliance with emerging regulations and internationally recognised ethical principles.

Such frameworks typically emphasize transparency, accountability, privacy, security, fairness and continuous risk assessment to promote trustworthy AI systems.

Veritas University has in recent years expanded its technology-focused academic programmes, including courses in Artificial Intelligence, reflecting its commitment to equipping students with skills for the digital economy.

The planned adoption of the Ethical AI Governance Framework is expected to position the university among Nigerian higher education institutions taking proactive steps to encourage responsible innovation while preparing graduates for an increasingly AI-driven world.
