Canada Stops South Africa, March Into Round of 16 with Eustáquio’s Late Strike

Stephen Eustáquio waited until the very last breath of regulation to break South African hearts, scoring a stunning stoppage-time goal in the 92nd minute to send Canada into the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 victory at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles, on Sunday.

For long stretches of an often tense and frustrating afternoon, it seemed as though the first knockout fixture in the history of both nations was destined for extra time. South Africa known as Bafana Bafana arrived with a game plan built almost entirely on caution, their defenders and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams repeatedly recycling possession among themselves rather than testing Canada’s backline.

The approach drew boos from the crowd inside SoFi Stadium on at least two occasions, with the South Africans apparently content to absorb pressure and hit on the counter.

Canada, for their part, were far the better side across 90 minutes. Jesse Marsch’s men registered a dominant 8-3 advantage in shots and held the edge in nearly every statistical category, but they could not find a way through a stubborn South African defence that seemed to grow more resolute the harder Canada pushed.

Jonathan David, Tani Oluwaseyi and Tajon Buchanan all came close at various points, with Ronwen Williams producing several fine saves to deny the Canadian attack.

The game’s most dramatic moment before the winning goal came in the 44th minute when Aubrey Modiba cleared a Moïse Bombito header off the goal line from a Stephen Eustáquio corner, with Williams then producing a sharp save from Buchanan’s follow-up rebound.

Canada also had strong penalty appeals waved away just before half-time when Richie Laryea went down under a challenge from Khuliso Mudau a decision upheld by VAR.

The second half offered more of the same Canada pressing, South Africa holding firm until Marsch made the decisive move in the 75th minute, introducing captain Alphonso Davies for his first appearance at this World Cup. Davies, who had been working his way back from injury, injected an immediate spark, drawing defenders and creating space that his teammates began to exploit. His arrival raised the intensity both on the pitch and in the stands, where travelling Canadian fans, still full of hope, roared their approval.

The breakthrough finally arrived with almost nothing left on the clock. Jacob Shaffelburg’s cross was headed clear by a South African defender, but the ball fell kindly to Eustáquio on the edge of the box. The Porto midfielder had the composure to chest it down before drilling a precise right-footed shot beyond the helpless Williams.

The stadium erupted. Back home in Vancouver, Toronto and across Canada, watch parties descended into scenes of pure joy, with streamers and smoke filling the air.

For South Africa, the elimination was as cruel as it was predictable. A team that had defied expectations to emerge from the group stage despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to Mexico on the opening night, playing the second half of that match with nine men ultimately ran out of ideas when they needed them most.

Needing an equaliser in the dying minutes of stoppage time, Bafana Bafana had no attacking rhythm to call upon, the price paid for spending ninety minutes trying not to lose rather than trying to win.

Canada, meanwhile, march on into the last 16, where they will face the winner of Monday’s clash between the Netherlands and Morocco in Houston on July 4. It is uncharted territory for a nation still learning to believe, and Eustáquio’s late, ice-cold finish may well be remembered as the moment this generation of Canadian footballers truly announced themselves to the world.
