NDLEA Destroys 51 Hectares of Cannabis Farms, Arrests 281 Suspects in Ekiti

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has destroyed more than 51 hectares of cannabis plantations, arrested 281 suspected drug offenders and secured the conviction of 50 persons in Ekiti State over the past year.

The Ekiti State Commander of the agency, Rufus Aina, disclosed this on Thursday in Ado Ekiti during activities commemorating the 2026 World Drug Day, warning that the widespread cultivation of cannabis across several communities remains a major concern.

According to Aina, the command also recovered 6,337.517 kilograms of various illicit drugs during the period under review, while other drug-related cases are still pending before the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti.

He said illegal cannabis cultivation continues to thrive in many local government areas of the state, with serious implications for public safety, security and socio-economic development.

Aina noted that although some residents regard cannabis farming as a source of livelihood, its production, trafficking and abuse have contributed to criminal activities, insecurity, school dropout, substance dependence and the destruction of forest reserves and communities.

Speaking on this year’s World Drug Day theme, “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” the commander said emerging threats such as synthetic drugs, abuse of prescription medications and the use of digital platforms for drug trafficking have further complicated the fight against illicit drugs.

He stressed that tackling the menace requires more than law enforcement, calling for stronger collaboration in prevention, public education, treatment, rehabilitation and community engagement.

Aina said the command carried out 76 advocacy rallies and public enlightenment campaigns, alongside 15 radio and television sensitisation programmes within the last year. He added that 87 drug users were successfully counselled and rehabilitated.

Highlighting enforcement efforts, the commander disclosed that officers destroyed over 127 tonnes of cannabis cultivated on more than 51 hectares of farmland and arrested 281 suspects involved in drug trafficking, peddling and abuse. Of the number, 50 have been convicted, while other prosecutions are ongoing.

He also cited notable convictions secured by the command, including a 20-year prison sentence handed to Osho Akindele for offences involving various illicit substances.

Aina further revealed the arrest of two elderly suspects identified as 78-year-old Ogunjobi Samuel of Ilupeju-Ekiti and 80-year-old Oke Samuel of Efon-Alaaye-Ekiti for alleged possession and trafficking of illicit drugs.

The commander urged residents to support the agency’s efforts by working collectively to curb drug abuse and trafficking, saying sustained cooperation is essential to addressing both longstanding and emerging drug-related challenges.

He commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji and the First Lady, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, for supporting anti-drug campaigns in the state. He also acknowledged the contributions of sister security agencies, non-governmental organisations, the National Youth Service Corps Drug Free Community Development Service, students and the Kayode Adamolekun Foundation toward the agency’s activities.
