Senate Orders Arrest of Ex-NNPCL Boss, Mele Kyari Over N210 Trillion Unaccounted Funds

The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has ordered the arrest of former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.

This decision came after Kyari failed to appear several times before the committee to answer questions about N210 trillion in unaccounted funds between 2017 and 2023. Lawmakers are determined to get to the bottom of the matter.

The committee, chaired by Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, issued the warrant after Kyari’s repeated absence from investigative hearings. Some senators had asked for more time because Kyari was reportedly receiving medical treatment abroad, but the majority insisted that the probe must move forward without further delay. Senator Adams Oshiomhole warned that ignoring the summons would weaken the Senate’s authority.

The huge sum in question relates to financial records flagged by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation. A former Chief Financial Officer of the NNPCL, Umar Isa, who appeared before the committee, argued that no money was actually missing and described the N210 trillion figure as misleading when compared to the company’s total earnings during that period.

This development has sparked fresh discussions about transparency and accountability in the management of Nigeria’s oil resources. The committee has directed other former officials, including Bala Wunti, to return for further questioning within two weeks.

Nigerians are watching closely to see how the situation will unfold.

The Senate’s strong action sends a clear message that no one is above the law, no matter how powerful. As the investigation continues, many hope it will bring clarity and help restore public confidence in how national assets are handled. This case highlights the importance of proper oversight in government agencies to prevent misuse of public funds.
