Registered Youth Voters Declined by 14% Between 2019 and 2023, INEC Data Shows
The number of registered youth voters in Nigeria declined by about 14 per cent between the 2019 and 2023 general elections, according to data compiled from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The data showed that registered voters classified as youths fell from 42.94 million in 2019 to 37.06 million in 2023, representing a decrease of 5.88 million voters
In contrast, the number of registered voters in other age categories increased during the same period.
Middle-aged voters rose from 25.18 million in 2019 to 33.41 million in 2023, while elderly voters increased from 12.18 million to 17.7 million. The number of voters classified as old also grew from 3.10 million to 5.29 million.
Overall, Nigeria’s total registered voter population increased from 84 million in 2019 to 93.47 million in 2023, an addition of 9.47 million voters.
The figures indicate a shift in the age composition of the electorate, with older voter categories accounting for a larger share of registered voters in 2023 compared to 2019.
