Berom Youth Group Raises the Alarm Over Alleged Sexual Harassment of Women in Plateau Communities

The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) has expressed concern over alleged cases of sexual harassment targeting women in rural communities across Plateau State, warning that persistent insecurity is placing female farmers and residents at greater risk.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its spokesperson, Rwang Tengwong, the association said women returning from farms in Ganawuri District and neighbouring communities have reported incidents of harassment.

According to the group, the deteriorating security situation in affected areas has left many women vulnerable while carrying out farming and other daily activities.

Tengwong said fear has become widespread among residents as insecurity continues to disrupt normal life in several rural communities.

The association linked the reported incidents to recurring attacks in Riyom and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas, citing the destruction of farmlands, cattle rustling and other forms of violence that have heightened insecurity and exposed residents to further risks.

BYM said the concerns come amid a fresh wave of violence in parts of the state.

The group also condemned the killing of a 52-year-old farmer, Joshua Bulus, who was reportedly ambushed and killed by gunmen in Dyan community, Rim District of Riyom Local Government Area. It noted that the incident, which residents said occurred late at night, has further heightened anxiety among community members.

In addition, the association alleged that approximately five hectares of cabbage and carrot farms ready for harvest were destroyed overnight in Gassa community of Ropp District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, resulting in significant economic losses for affected farmers and their families.

According to BYM, the latest incidents occurred just days after an attack on Gwom-Ajang village in Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where several people were reportedly killed and others injured.

The association described the developments as part of a continuing pattern of violence affecting communities in the area and called for urgent intervention by relevant authorities.

BYM urged security agencies and all levels of government to take decisive measures to safeguard women and other vulnerable residents, strengthen security in affected communities and ensure that those responsible for the attacks and alleged abuses are identified and prosecuted.

The group stressed that beyond issuing condemnations, authorities must take concrete actions to restore peace, protect livelihoods and rebuild public confidence in the security architecture across the affected communities.
